Opportunity to join Cottingham Parish Council
Following the resignation of a Councillor from Castle Ward, Cottingham Parish Council is seeking to co-opt one resident onto the Council.
The Parish Council has a wide range of responsibilities and represents the interests of residents to other local authorities and organisations. The role of a co-opted Councillor is exactly the same as that of an elected Councillor, is very varied and can be extremely rewarding.
Candidates for co-option must be a qualifying Commonwealth citizen, or a citizen of the Republic of Ireland, or a relevant citizen of the European Union and have attained the age of 18. Candidates must also meet the same qualification criteria as a nominated candidate, as laid out in the Local Government Act 1972, section 79. Equally a candidate will be disqualified from being able to be co-opted if they are covered by the criteria laid out in section 80 of the 1972 Act. It is the responsibility of the candidate seeking co-option to ensure their eligibility for office.
If you are interested in applying for the vacancy please complete the co-option application form Councillor Co-option Application Form or obtain a copy from the Parish Office. This should include a brief summary of your reasons for wishing to be a Councillor; previous community/council experience; any other skills you can bring to the Council, your interests and recent career history and should be submitted to the Clerk by 4pm on Wednesday 20 November (emailed submissions accepted).
The Parish Council will consider all expressions of interest at its meeting on 26 November 2024. Canvassing of current Council members will result in disqualification from the co-option process.
